Moving around in Dubai: why you should choose the Dubai metro

A big and necessary premise about the Dubai metro: it’s really cool.

  1. It’s impressively clean, both the vehicles themselves and the stations (the metro bathrooms could be, by definition, the dirtiest thing in the world, but there you could lie down on the floor).
  2. Each vehicle has a car reserved for women and children.
  3. If you have luggage, you will always find someone who will stand up to give you a seat.
  4. It’s completely automated and, consequently, very punctual (references to things like Trenitalia (Italian people will understand) are purely accidental hahaha).

There are two metro lines, divided by zones, plus a tram line (which serves the Dubai Marina area). We won’t go into the details of the zone division here, but we’ll just tell you that depending on whether you’re traveling within the same zone, to adjacent zones, or to “separate” zones, the price will increase, ranging from 3 AED (80 cents) to a maximum of 8.50 AED (just over 2€).

In this article, we explain the costs of the NOL card (the card for using public transportation in Dubai) and which card we recommend.

We would like to tell you that the entire city of Dubai is reachable by metro, but unfortunately, it’s so big that it’s not currently possible. However, for all the main attractions, it’s very well connected, and you will rarely need to take a taxi (or Uber or Careem).

Here you can find the lines and the respective map:
