How to reach Hallstatt, the real-life Frozen town

Austria is a beautiful country, full of breathtaking landscapes, majestic mountains, and picturesque villages. In spring, with the first rays of sun, the temperatures become milder and nature begins to express its most intense colors. But maybe you already know all of this.

What you may not know is that there is a village that stands out among all the others: the enchanting village of Hallstatt. This village is a must-see for anyone visiting Austria in the spring. With its breathtaking views and traditional architecture, Hallstatt will make your weekend truly magical.

Hallstatt is located in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria and is a small village that seems to have been an inspiration for the kingdom of Arendelle in Disney’s Frozen. For this reason, it is a suitable destination for everyone, young and old, and especially for children who will easily recognize the setting of one of their favorite movies in Hallstatt!

You might think that Hallstatt is too difficult to reach and that – especially if you have only a few days available – it is almost impossible for you to visit this wonderful little town. But don’t worry: we will tell you how to reach Hallstatt from Vienna at a low cost and in a fast way.

The first thing to do is to go to the website of the Austrian railways (OBB) and set the route Vienna – Hallstatt: you will see that the journey to reach Hallstatt takes just over 3 hours, but there are three things you need to keep in mind:

  • the landscapes you will see from the train window are truly breathtaking, so it will not be a boring journey at all, but rather you will feel like you are on a “tourist train” that takes you to discover Austria.
  • You can include a visit to Salzburg and Linz in your itinerary, as they are really worth it!
  • Finally, OBB offers a daily ticket (valid for 24 hours) for two people at around €35, a real bargain considering that you can make as many trips as you want. You will reach Hallstatt with a very small amount of money.

We also recommend that you keep in mind the private company Westbahn, which offers high-speed trains on many routes and with variable prices throughout the day.

PS: here too the trains are fantastic, modern, and with bar/cafeteria areas.
